2011 Freedom Riders Announced!
American Experience announces the 2011 Student Freedom Riders! It’s an amazing group of 40 students, hailing from 33 states and the District of Columbia, as well as China and Tajikistan. These students were selected from nearly 1,000 applicants, so as you can imagine, it’s a very impressive group. They demonstrate an incredible commitment to civic engagement and a desire to learn from history. And, they are so excited and honored to be a part of this journey.

The 2011 Student Freedom Ride will kick off in Washington, DC on May 6 with an amazing event at the Newseum, not only screening the film, but honoring the 50th anniversary of the Rides. Many original Freedom Riders will be in attendance: Congressman John Lewis, Bernard Lafayette, James Lawson, Diane Nash, Joan Mulholland, Ernest “Rip” Patton, Robert & Helen Singleton, Charles Person, Reginald Green, Dion Diamond and others. It will be an amazing way to start the Ride, which will journey all the way to New Orleans, arriving on the Freedom Riders premiere date, May 16.

May 10…Community preview of PBS production of Freedom Riders (time & place TBA)
May 11…Welcome Student Freedom Riders (invitation-only reception & opening of “Courage Under Fire” photo exhibit at Public Library of Anniston-Calhoun County)
May 12 (9 a.m.)…Unveiling of interpretive signage at two bus station buildings (Greyhound at 1031 Gurnee; Trailways at 9th & Noble)
May 14 (11 a.m.)…Reception and opening to the public of Courage Under Fire exhibit at Public Library of Anniston-Calhoun County (10th & Wilmer)
